Ah, Super Metroid. Some say it's the greatest of the
Metroid games. Some say it's the best 2D game every made. Some say
it's the best game ever made, period.
But even people who don't say these things agree that's it's
great. That might be because people who say bad things about Metroid are found
dead, with their life energy mysteriously leeched away. Or it could be
simply because it's true.
So, this page is dedicated to Super Metroid, one of the greatest
games ever.
Super Metroid, like all the Metroid games, is a unique
combination of exploring, shooting, and powering up, in an escalating
cycle. The more exploring you do, the more power-up items you find, and
the better equipped you become to shoot (and kill) everything that moves, and do
even more exploring...and so on.
At the beginning of the game,
the last known surviving metroid is stolen by the Space Pirates, and Samus sets
out to find it. She's equipped with the basics: her suit and its power
beam gun.
But, since Samus' suit is based on technology from the
Chozo, who left temples and technology on various planets (before mysteriously
dying out or something), she can upgrade her suit with Chozo relics (and
sometimes other things). Here, on planet Zebes, where the Space Pirates
have set up shop (again), Samus has a big advantage because of the Chozo
remains.
During the course of the game, Samus will collect
literally dozens of powerups (mostly missiles and energy tanks). See if
you can match up the powerups with their Chozo "icons" below:
Super Metroid had some of the most beautiful game environments
of its time, excellent art and level design, and great creature designs as
well. In addition to creatures already introduced in Metroid, it boasted
some great bosses. Here below are some of the bosses of Super Metroid:
These last three had little "extras". Two of
them have the clichéd "not quite dead yet" routine, which was pretty
cool in both cases. The other had a secret "shortcut" to
defeating it, which we won't reveal here ('cause we didn't get a
screenshot).
The middle one, Crocomire, has a particularly cool death
sequence--it melts in the lava like so:
And the last one is the end boss of the first Metroid game, the
Mother Brain. But this time, she doesn't roll over quite so easily.
It's one of the most memorable end boss battles in videogames, as the
"Super Metroid" from the game's title sucks onto the Mother Brain's
head and gives Samus the leg up ('cause Samus was getting her ass kicked,
although you do have to put up a pretty good fight to that point). Here
are a few shots of the sequence:
Stay tuned for more screenshots, and videos of boss fights,
coming soon...
