How to Import and Export Music with an Action Replay

< Back to Page 1

Use the Band Brothers Save Tool to Exchange Music
If you haven't already done so, please browse to the location where you saved your Band Brothers backup file, and copy the .duc file with your save name over to a different location. This is optional, but by having your original file in a second, safe location, you'll be able to recover your original save game in case you accidentally overwrite songs or somehow corrupt your save file.
Now we're actually going to add or extract music from the 8 custom song slots in your Band Brothers save. Browse to the folder where you extracted the contents for the Band Brothers Save Tool, and run bbstool.exe.

There's nothing to install! You should now see the program window. Click on File -> Open -> Action Replay MAX for DS uncompressed save file, and you'll be prompted to locate your .duc file that you made with the Action Replay software earlier.

Once you've selected your backup .duc file, click Open. Sorry, in this example I happen to have some Japanese music files that I imported earlier (those work too!). Your screen should look something like this.

The window will display the contents of the 8 custom song slots in your save game. The song titles listed will appear as they do in the game in the custom song slots. If any of your song slots are empty, the Save Tool will display that slot as (Empty or invalid). There are 3 things you can do from here. Export songs from this list to .bbs files, import .bbs files into this list, and rearrange the order of the songs listed. If you have custom music that you've created or want to save, EXPORT THE MUSIC TO BBS FILES before you import anything new!

Exporting Songs:
To export songs from your song list into BBS files that you can store and share on the Internet, just highlight the song you want to save, and click the Export button. You will be prompted for a destination and file name.

The program defaults to the folder where you opened your .duc file, which is why I recommended putting your .duc file in the same folder you're using to store BBS files. Otherwise, browse to the folder where you're storing .bbs music files. Now enter a meaningful name for the song, click Save, and that's it! The newly created .bbs file can be shared with everyone on the Internet! Repeat this process for every song that you want to share or save on your computer, highlighting exporting, and naming each one.

Importing Songs:
Now that you've downloaded some new songs to play with, here's how to import the .bbs music files into your game save. First, highlight the song slot that you want to put a new song into, and click on the Import button.
-WARNING!!- When you choose to import to a song slot, any song that exists in that slot will be overwritten! If you want to keep a song before putting a new one in it's place, BE SURE TO EXPORT THE EXISTING SONG FIRST!
You'll now be prompted to choose a .bbs file to import. Highlight the BBS file that you want to put on your game save, and click Open. The song you chose is now in the selected slot of the game save! Repeat this process on the remaining song slots, choosing up to 8 songs to play. In this example, I've replaced all 8 songs on my save file.

Rearranging Songs:
There's nothing to it. Highlight a song, and click on Move Up or Move Down to change it's location in the song list. This affects what order the songs are listed in the game.

Once you're happy with the song list, click on File -> Save to save the changes to your .duc file. Close the Save Tool, and you're ready to import your game save with the Action Replay software and restore the data to your game!

Import Your New Save File and Restore Your Game Save
Connect the USB cable to the Action Replay and the PC. Start your Nintendo DS - GBA Max Drive software. Insert your Band Brothers game card into the DS slot of the Action Replay, plug the Action Replay into a DS or GBA, and turn on the system. The system should show that the Action Replay is in USB SERVER MODE. In the Action Replay software, click on Max Drive DS (DS) -> Manage and swap saves -> Online community server, just as you did to back up your game save. Highlight your original save file in the left panel, and click on the 2nd button under the left panel that looks like a garbage can to delete the file. You should have already copied your .duc file to another safe location. The reason we're doing this is because we're going to import your newly modified .duc file, and if we left this here, after importing you would see a second save file with a duplicate name, and additional duplicates would be created every time you imported your .duc file.

At the prompt to delete, choose Yes. Your save file is now gone from the left panel. We're going to put that back with your new songs! Click on the 3rd button under the left panel that looks like a vise with an arrow on top pointing down to it.

When prompted, browse to your .duc file that you made earlier, which should be in the same place where your BBS files are stored. Highlight your .duc save file, and click Open. BAM! Your save data is back in the left panel of the Action Replay software, and it contains the new songs you just swapped in!

Now in the lower left corner, click Back, and then Back again. From here, click on Restore my game cart save -> My PC database. Highlight your game save in the left panel, and click Next. You will be prompted to MAKE SURE THE CORRECT GAME IS INSERTED INTO THE ACTION REPLAY, and it is a valid warning!

Make sure your Band Brothers game card is in the DS slot of the Action Replay, and click on Yes.  Your Action Replay software and GameBoy screens will look like this.

Once again, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS!!!
When the progress on the software says 100% Complete, IT IS NOT DONE! The Action Replay now has to write the data it just received to your game card, and the screens should look like this. While the system that has the Action Replay says Device Busy, DO NOT INTERRUPT THE PROCESS!

When the restore process is truly complete a Restore Complete message will be displayed, and you should see this.

Click on the Finish button, and you're done!  Shut off the system with the Action Replay, close the PC software, disconnect the USB cable, and put your Band Brothers game card in your DS. Now enjoy the new music!
